Quay to Laperouse

Visit some of the city’s eastern suburb beaches via a ride from the Quay to Laperouse. At Laperouse enjoy the panoramic views of Botany Bay, Port Botany, the airport, surrounding beaches and then on to the Mascot train station.

The eastern suburbs are a tad hilly in parts and you need to be comfortable riding in urban streets with sometimes heavy traffic.

To access the Bourke St cycleway from the Quay, cycle up Macquarie St then at the state library turn left down the motorway. This is legal, safe and only takes a minute. Stick hard to the left and you will enter a breakdown lane in the domain tunnel that exits right at Burke St Woolloomooloo. Ride 2.4 km up Bourke St. cycleway and take Parkham St on the left (easily missed!) to cross the Eastern Distributor leading to the Tibby Cotter twisty bridge.

Proceed into Centennial Park after riding across the SCG main entrance. In one half a circuit of the Grand Parade, watch out for Musgrave Ave to exit. A shortcut variant is to turn right at Dickens Dr. Ride up Avoca St for 200m and turn right into Clovelly Rd for 1.7 km then right into Arden St. and then down to the Coogee beach views.

Continue on Arden then swing around the cemetery onto Malabar Rd. Turn left into Torrington Rd. Left at Inman, right Banks, and left Undine to get to the shared path on Marine Parade that offers great views up and down the coast from the Mistral Point lookout north of Maroubra beach.

Exit Maroubra beach at the ramp and ride on Fitzgerald Ave for 300 metres and then turn left to Malabar Rd. Watch out at one km for a bike path on the left (easily missed!) just before the High School that leads onto Anzac Parade. After 500 metres, right turn at the conspicuous bike road sign to Laperouse. This route bypasses the busy shops and Long Bay goal. It is well signposted.

Leave Laperouse on the path that enters the park about 200 metres on from the public toilets near the fish and chips shops.

After cycling on the sometimes gravel pathway and on regaining the road system, beware of heavy Port Botany truck movements. Turn left on Botany Rd and turn right after 600 metres onto Beauchamp Rd then left on Denison St. Left again on Wentworth Ave where after one km you will encounter a cycle path. Turn right at Sutherland St and then left at Coward. Just one km or so and we are back on Bourke St! The Mascot station is just 200 metres north.
